Mackenzie Moore joins our team as the Tourism Emergency Program Manager Mackenzie was born and raised in Williams Lake and has recently returned after spending a few years travelling, working, and studying her BA in Sociology while based out of Kamloops and Calgary. During this time she worked in various fields from Residence Life, Hospitality, Marketing and Communications, and Pharmaceutical Patient Care. Unable to stay away from the region and communities that raised her she has embraced the opportunity to return to live, work, and play in the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast again. Read More….

WILDFIRE RESILIENCE ROUNDTABLE

Each Wildfire Resilience Roundtable will begin with a wildfire scenario developed from the guest perspective. Although each session will have a similar structure, the actual scenario will be tailored to reflect the realistic and relevant needs of each region. Breakout groups will then be guided by a facilitator and designed to explore a specific question with real solutions. All discussions will be conducted with a Trauma Informed Approach (TIA) to ensure the cultural and emotional safety of all participants. In this session, you will learn more about:
- Developing a shared understanding of the impacts a wildfire may have on guests
- How messaging can influence guest confidence and safety
- Generating a repository of solutions or resources that either currently exist or could be developed to support guests and tourism operators
The Tourism Relief Fund, administered by Canada’s regional development agencies and Innovation Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), supports tourism businesses and organizations adapt their operations to meet public health requirements while investing in products and services to facilitate their future growth. With a budget of $500 million over two years (ending March 31, 2023), including $50 million specifically dedicated to Indigenous tourism initiatives, and $15 million for national initiatives, this fund will position Canada to be a destination of choice when domestic and international travel is once again safe by:
- empowering tourism operators to create new or enhance existing tourism experiences and products to attract more local and domestic visitors
- helping the sector reposition itself to welcome international visitors by offering the best Canadian tourism experiences we have to offer the world.

A new website has launched to help people stay up to date on the work being done to recover from major slides and road washouts. The Cariboo Road Recovery Projects website will address the transportation impacts at 10 major locations, including Soda Creek-Macalister Road, Quesnel Hydraulic Road and Kersley-Dale Landing Road. “The Cariboo has been hit hard by changing weather patterns, which have caused unprecedented slides and road washouts,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “People are understandably concerned about damage to roads they rely on every day. We are working hard to find solutions at each project site, and this new website will give people up-to-date, detailed information about what’s happening with the sites that affect them.”
People are encouraged to visit the website to learn more about projects, including location, current conditions and status. Over the coming months, ministry project teams will be engaging with communities, local governments, Indigenous communities and stakeholders to discuss potential transportation solutions at each site. The Canadian Red Cross is providing one-time financial assistance to households whose primary residence has been severely impacted by this season’s wildfires, households who were evacuated from the Lytton, B.C. region due to wildfires, and households under an evacuation order for 10 or more consecutive days due to wildfires in the province.
The Canadian Red Cross is able to provide financial assistance in one of three ways:
- $2,000 to eligible B.C. households whose primary residence has been severely impacted by this season’s wildfires, based on structural loss information provided by EMBC; or
- $2,000 to eligible households who were evacuated from the Lytton, B.C. region due to wildfires; or
- $1,200 for households in B.C. under mandatory evacuation order by a Local Authority or through a Band Council Resolution for longer than 10 consecutive days during the 2021 wildfire season.
Note: Households who have already received $1,200 and whose primary residence has been severely impacted (based on structural loss information provided by EMBC) by this season’s wildfires could receive additional financial assistance of $800 for a total of $2,000. The Red Cross will contact those eligible for additional financial assistance.
