Annual General MeetingWhile the Tourism Summit has been postponed, we want to clear up some confusion – the AGM is a legal requirement under the BC Societies Act and will proceed as scheduled on Friday, November 3 at 10:00 am in the CCCTA board room. |
Message From The ChairDear Tourism colleagues, This year’s summer was devastating for many of us but we have started our long journey to recover. Your board of directors and our incredible staff have been working on your behalf to advocate for solutions to the needs our industry is facing following this season’s wildfires. As chair of the board for Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism and your representative on the board of the Tourism Industry Association of BC, I personally, have been involved in many of these discussions. Below are some examples of the work undertaken:
Some of the successes we have seen include obtaining permits for the movement of our stakeholders and visitors during the evacuations, successfully ensuring that our tourism operators who were not evacuated were able to continue operating through the backcountry ban, reversal of insurance claims that were denied to get business interruption insurance to evacuated stakeholders, expansion of the areas eligible for red cross support, receipt of $200,000 from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture for marketing to change the negative perceptions in our key short-haul markets, and confirmation from the federal government of contribution towards disaster financial assistance to the province. BUT there is more work to be done and this is where you come in! Government needs to hear your voice – they need to hear from businesses what your needs are so that we can continue to work towards solutions on your behalf. Here are some actions that you can take to help your business:
As communicated earlier, we have decided to postpone our summit to Spring 2018 but Amy and I will be out in November to talk to as many stakeholders as possible. See the dates below in our roadshow calendar to know when we are in your area. We hope you can make it to one of the meetings and look forward to seeing you. Andre |

Destination BC Supports Cariboo Chilcotin CoastThrough the annual Explore BC campaign, Destination BC (DBC) has taken action to counteract losses to tourism due to the unprecedented scale, duration and impact of the wildfires on travel within the province; as well as correct misinformation about conditions within the province among British Columbians and our neighbours in Alberta and Washington. By redirecting funds, DBC increased our Explore BC budget by 50% or $285K. The program was rejigged to focus largely on promoting recovery efforts in the affected areas of the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast, Thompson Okanagan and Kootenay Rockies. As the Explore BC campaign winds down, DBC has re-allocated $400K to support the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism Association (CCCTA); as well as $30K each to the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) and Kootenay Rockies Tourism (KRT) to drive last-minute summer visits. DBC will continue to collaborate with the regional destination marketing organizations in all three affected areas to support maximum alignment and amplify efforts. The following points have been identified for these marketing efforts: Markets: primarily BC but ideally also Washington & Alberta Key Themes: September – October: fall colours, animal migration (bear, salmon, ecotourism), fishing at family-friendly lodges, RV-ing and festivals Late October through November: Hunting, Fishing and Canadian winter experiences (sleigh riding, wolf calling, skiing, ice fishing, winter lodges, dog sledding and Barkerville Christmas) January to Spring: “Regrowth” after the wildfire (babies on ranches/ in wildlife) |
Minister Beare Supports the Cariboo Chilcotin CoastWe are pleased to confirm the execution of an agreement between the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture and CCCTA to undertake some immediate marketing on behalf of our industry. “Wildfire Emergency Relief Marketing and Development” This includes: – Creating semi-customized marketing promotional initiatives.. – Marketing the region to visitors using traditional and non-traditional marketing tools including but not limited to print, social media, digital, and direct marketing etc. – Leveraging funds to support destination development priorities in the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast region. – Working closely with Destination British Columbia (DBC) to ensure marketing efforts are complementary and not duplicative of the provincial recovery efforts and marketing plan.
